KiviDB License

The license

From version 1.1.0, the KiviDB database software (the server, its command-line tools and the published packages and container images) is released under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (AGPLv3). The full text is the LICENSE file in the kividbio/kividb repository; that file, not this page, is the license.

In short, and without changing what the license says: you may use, study, modify and share KiviDB, for any purpose, including commercially. If you distribute KiviDB, or a modified version of it, you must make its source code available under the same license. If you modify KiviDB and let others use your modified version over a network, you must also offer them its source code. Running an unmodified KiviDB, including as part of your own product or service, carries no obligation to publish anything.

Using KiviDB does not put your application under the AGPL. An application that talks to KiviDB over the network, through any Redis client, is a separate program, open or closed, commercial or not. Client libraries, configuration files, and the scripts and functions you send to KiviDB are not part of KiviDB.

Commercial license

KIVIDB PRIVATE LIMITED owns the copyright in KiviDB and also offers it under a commercial license, for organizations that cannot use AGPL software or that want to modify or embed KiviDB without publishing their changes. Write to support@kividb.io.

Every version of KiviDB released under the AGPLv3 stays available under the AGPLv3. The commercial license is offered alongside it, not in place of it.

Source code and releases

The source code, the release notes and every release from 1.1.0 onwards (binaries for Linux and macOS, and .deb and .rpm packages) are published on GitHub at github.com/kividbio/kividb. The downloads page links to them.

KiviDB Cloud

KiviDB Cloud, the managed service, is not software you receive, and the AGPLv3 does not govern it. Using it is subject to the Terms of Service, the Privacy Policy and the Service Level Agreement.

Release check

When it starts, KiviDB checks GitHub once for a newer release (github.com/kividbio/kividb/releases/latest). Nothing is sent but the request itself, and it goes to GitHub, not to KIVIDB PRIVATE LIMITED. Turn it off with the command-line option --update-check no or the environment variable KIVIDB_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1.

Trademarks

The AGPLv3 licenses the software, not the KiviDB name or logo. You may say that your product uses or is compatible with KiviDB, but you may not use the name or logo in a way that suggests your product, or a modified version of KiviDB, is made or endorsed by KIVIDB PRIVATE LIMITED. "Redis" is a registered trademark of Redis Ltd. and "Dragonfly" a trademark of DragonflyDB Ltd.; KiviDB is not affiliated with either.
